Set of Brutalist Candle Holders by Patrick Meyer, 1990s

They weren��t meant to be candlesticks, not at first. Mateo had been working with pewter for weeks, obsessing over tension and rhythm��stacking, compressing, distorting. He said they were studies in pressure, but to Alma, they looked like spines. Not human ones. Older. Something prehistoric, or celestial.

It wasn��t until the gallery opening that someone dropped a tea light into the tallest one, uninvited. The flame caught a groove and flickered down its twisted ribs. Mateo didn��t say a word. Just watched, then nodded.

After that, he made more. A set of three. Each one slightly different.
