Every evening at half past six, like clockwork, Madame Rousseau would glide the oak cart from the corner of her salon to the center of the room. The wheels creaked in protest, but she liked thatsaid it gave the cart character, like it was announcing the beginning of something sacred.

There were rules: gin only on Thursdays, always serve olives in the textured glass bowl, and nevernevermuddle the lime directly in the glass. Shed hum softly as she moved, the same Charles Trenet tune, the one her husband used to whistle when she beat him at belote.

The cart wasnt just furniture. It was performance. Precision. Proof that ritual, no matter how small, was its own kind of pleasure.
