Metal Scroll Curule Bench

Detail
Marianne de Villefort sat at the edge of her wrought iron bench, holding a scandalous letter in one hand and a cigarette in the other. The garden was still, save for the slow unraveling of smoke curling toward the trellis. Her maid had just pressed the linen cushion that morning, yet already it bore the imprint of her restless shifting.
"Should I burn it?" she murmured to no one, fingers grazing the delicate scrolls of the arms, tracing circles like the ones she had walked around Paris trying to forget him.
Marianne had perched on this seat through it allhurried dressing for midnight escapades, weary collapses at dawn. In its quiet, unshifting presence, it had become the most reliable thing in her life.
